Shockwave Therapy

Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy treatment (ESWT) is a clinically proven non-surgical treatment available for people with chronic tendon problems. Studies have shown 70% success rate for patients who have not improved with physiotherapy and exercises. It helps avoid injection and surgery. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has deemed this procedure safe. It is also covered by all major insurance companies.

Shockwave is a procedure where sound waves or impulses of energy are passed through the skin to the injured part of the body using a special device. The shockwaves are mechanical and not electric and work by increasing blood flow to the damaged, defective or injured area. This accelerates the body’s healing process stimulating cell regeneration and decreasing pain.

The ESWT application lasts about 5 minutes to deliver the shockwave energy and it is best to attend for 3 sessions over 3 consecutive weeks.

 Treatable conditions include:

  • Plantar fasciitis

  • Achilles Tendinopathy

  • Patellar tendinopathy

  • Rotator cuff tendinopathy / shoulder pain

  • Greater trochanter pain syndrome/ lateral hip pain

  • Tennis elbow

  • Upper Hamstring tendinopathy

  • Golfers elbow

  • Plus many more!

What happens during shockwave therapy?

The area of pain will be identified, a gel will be applied and probe is pressed on to the affected area. The shockwaves are delivered through the skin to the effected area. The shockwaves initiate an inflammation-like response in the injured tissue that is being treated, and prompts the body to respond naturally by increasing blood circulation, the number of blood vessels and therefore healing in the injured tissue.

What does it feel like?

The shockwaves feel like pulses which are a little uncomfortable but not painful. Typically, your first treatment will start with a small amount of pain and settings will be adjusted when you adapt to this pain so that the best level of shockwave is delivered whilst comfort levels are maintained.

Shockwave treatments performed weekly. Each treatment session takes about 15 minutes and you are likely to need between 3-5 sessions.
